Thursday night, we’re lighting it orange for patient safety.

Safe healthcare depends on the system around it. Health workers need enough people, time and resources to give patients the care they need, when they need it. When those things are stretched too thin, patient safety is put at risk.

That’s why tomorrow night we’re bringing patients, whānau, health workers and political representatives together in Auckland for Patient Safety Day Forum.

We’ll hear directly from people who have experienced our health system, from those working within it, and from political parties about what they would do to make healthcare safer.

Because when the system is under pressure, the consequences are felt by real people.

Patient safety needs a strong public health system

For Kaitiaki Hauora, patient safety is inseparable from the bigger decisions we make about our public health system.

A safer health system needs more than good intentions. These are the three things Kaitiaki Hauora is asking for:

• Fund public health properly – so everyone gets care when they need it.

• Honour Te Tiriti – ensuring Māori lead on equity in the health system.

• Keep healthcare public – so care stays for people, not profit.
