Next Monday, 7 April, we’re marking World Health Day with two public events in Wellington, because public healthcare matters, and holding it together with goodwill isn’t going to cut it.

We all know the system is under huge strain. Staff are stretched, patients are waiting, and more and more of the conversation is drifting toward private delivery and patch-up fixes. Meanwhile, the public system is expected to just keep coping.

So we thought we’d do something visible.

At lunchtime, we’ll be holding a symbolic public bake sale in Midland Park. Bake sales are what communities do when something important has been left short. And that is not how public healthcare should work.

Then that evening, we’re hosting a public meeting at St Andrew’s on The Terrace to bring people together, hear from some great speakers, and have a proper conversation about what needs to happen next.

At the heart of it, we’re calling for three pretty simple things:

Fund public health properly – so everyone gets care when they need it.

Honour Te Tiriti – ensuring Māori lead on equity in the health system.

Keep healthcare public – so care stays for people, not profit.

That means a system that is properly resourced, grounded in equity, and focused on people, not profit.

If you’re in Wellington, we’d really love to see you there. Pop by the bake sale on your lunch break, come to the public meeting after work, or do both - we’d love to see you.
