Onboarding Guide

Welcome to Kaitiaki Hauora.

This page has everything you need to get started in supporting the campaign.

Kaitiaki Hauora brings together organisations and individuals who care about strengthening public healthcare in Aotearoa. Our aim is to advocate for change in our health system.

Kaitiaki Hauora has three core priorities:

  • Adequate and sustained funding to meet the real health needs of our population

  • Protecting and strengthening publicly provided healthcare, rather than outsourcing it to private interests

  • Honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi by embedding equity, partnership, and Māori leadership in how health services are designed, funded, and delivered. Before we get into how things work, there are a couple of quick, practical things that help us include your organisation properly.

Getting your organisation set up

When you have a moment, please send through to admin@kaitiakihauora.nz

  • Your logo

  • Your website link

  • Your social media handles

  • Any upcoming reports, events, or campaigns we should know about

  • The name and email address of your representative for communications and attending Plenary meetings.

Your logo will be displayed on our website and in similar publications along with other members.

Knowing what organisations have coming up helps us plan ahead and support amplification where we can.

What Kaitiaki Hauora is

Kaitiaki Hauora is a collective focused on advocating for public healthcare in Aotearoa and raising public awareness on these issues.

Organisations involved keep their own voice and independence. Kaitiaki Hauora doesn’t speak on behalf of individual organisations unless explicitly agreed.

Instead, it provides a shared platform to advocate for change, raise awareness of health system challenges, highlight research and lived experience, and support conversations about how the system can work better.

How organisations usually take part

Organisations take part in different ways depending on time and capacity. Some are very active, others dip in when something connects with their work.

You can attend Plenary meetings of member organisations which are held remotely every 4 weeks, keeping you up to date on developments.

Common ways organisations engage include:

  • Sharing Kaitiaki Hauora posts or reports on social media

  • Encouraging your own members to follow or like us on Facebook and LinkedIn

  • Contributing research, expertise, or commentary

  • Letting us know about reports, announcements, or events

  • Participating in campaign moments like World Health Day or the Budget

  • Sharing stories from healthcare workers, patients, or communities

  • Contributing financially and encouraging your members to donate

There’s no expectation to do everything. Being part of the collective simply means being willing to support the kaupapa when it makes sense for your organisation.

Our structure

Kaitiaki Hauora is not currently an incorporated society. There is currently no membership fee. Donations and other financial transactions are processed through our financial host partner, the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions Te Kauae Kaimahi Incorporated, and reported transparently to our Executive.

Members meet every 4 weeks in a Plenary meeting of all member organisations. You can find a list of our members on our website. Between meetings, an Executive Committee meets fortnightly and makes decisions to maintain the organisation’s momentum, reporting to the Plenary meetings. Membership of the Committee, which was elected late last year, is listed below.

We have Communications, Fundraising and Research subcommittees, which are open to volunteers.

How our communications work

Kaitiaki Hauora communicates with its members by email and the Plenary meetings. It communicates with the public by sharing content through the website, social media, and media engagement.

This might include:

  • Highlighting research and reports

  • Sharing stories from people working in healthcare

  • Commenting on current health issues

  • Amplifying work happening across the sector

From time to time, we may also coordinate messaging around key moments where a collective voice helps the issue land more strongly.

Things Kaitiaki Hauora can amplify best

We’re always keen to help lift awareness of important work happening across the health sector.

The things that tend to land best in media and social are:

  • New research or reports

  • Real stories from healthcare workers, patients, or communities

  • Clear examples of how policy decisions are affecting people

  • Events, panels, or public discussions about healthcare issues

  • Strong expert commentary on current health topics

If you have something coming up that fits into this space, we encourage you to let us know. The earlier we know about it, the easier it is for us to help amplify it.

Campaigning

Kaitiaki Hauora also advocates for change through methods such as

  • Meetings with MPs, political party spokespeople and Ministers,

  • Media releases

  • Actions and campaigns that engage members and the public and gain media attention

We encourage members to participate in these activities.

Staying connected

From time to time, we’ll send updates about:

  • Upcoming campaigns

  • Events or reports worth sharing

  • Opportunities to contribute ideas or content

We aim to keep communication useful and straightforward.

Shared kaupapa

Organisations involved in Kaitiaki Hauora may have different views on specific policy details, but we share a broad goal - a strong, properly funded public healthcare system in Aotearoa.

The group’s kaupapa is grounded in honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi, embedding equity and partnership in health system design, funding, and service delivery. Its values include transparency, fairness, respect for health workers, collaborative leadership, and supporting the democratic voice of those who deliver and rely on public healthcare.

That shared purpose is what brings the collective together.
